O Capitão do Titanic, Edward John Smith (27 janeirmo de 1850 – 15 de abril de 1912) nasceu em Hanley, Stoke-on-Trent. Em 12 de julho de 1887, casou-se com Sarah Eleanor, com quem teve sua filha Helen Melville Smith, que nasceu em Waterloo, Lancashire, em 1898. A família vivia em Southampton.

Smith se juntou a White Star Line em março de 1880, como o quarto oficial do navio Celtic. Em 1887, ele recebeu seu primeiro comando White Star, o SS Republic. Em 1888, Smith ganhou seu certificado de mestrado e ingressou na Royal Naval Reserve, que se classificava como um tenente. Isso significava que, em tempos de guerra, Smith poderia ser chamado para servir a Marinha Real.
Em 1895, Smith foi capitão do Majestic, do qual ficou por nove anos. Quando se iniciou a guerra dos Boers em 1899, Smith foi chamado para o transporte de tropas no Majestic para a Colônia do Cabo. Duas viagens foram feitas á África do Sul, sem incidentes. Smith ganhou a Medalha de transportes em 1903, então foi considerado como um capitão “confiável”.
Smith tornou-se o comodoro da White Star Line. Alguns passageiros só embarcariam se o navio fosse comandado por ele. Ele ficou conhecido como o “Capitão dos milionários” por que a classe alta da Inglaterra geralmente eram os únicos que pediam para ele estar no comando dos navios. Depois que ele se tornou comodoro em 1904, virou rotina para Smith comandar os navios mais novos.
Em 1904, foi dado o comando de um dos maiores navios do mundo na época, o Baltic. Sua viagem inaugural de Liverpool a Nova Iorque foi um sucesso. Após três anos comandando o Baltic, Smith foi chamado para comandar outro navio enorme, o Adriatic. A viagem também foi um sucesso. Durante seu comando neste navio, Smith recebeu uma promoção para comandante. Ele passava a assinar seu nome como “Comandante Edward John Smith, RD, RNR”.
Smith foi considerado um dos capitães mais experientes, e por isso foi chamado para assumir o comando do mais novo trio de navios da White Star (e maiores também): O Olympic. A viagem inaugural de Liverpool a Nova Iorque foi um sucesso, e concluída em 21 de Junho de 1911. Mas houve alguns incidentes com o grande Olympic. Em 20 de setembro de 1911, o Olympic teve uma colisão com o HMS Hawke. Embora a colisão houvesse deixado dois compartimentos do Olympic cheios e um de seus eixos de hélice totalmente torcido, ele foi capaz de voltar para Southampton. No inquérito, o Olympic tomou a culpa do incidente, devido a seu gigantesco tamanho, do qual pode ter gerado uma sucção que puxou o HMS Hawke a seu lado.
Este e outros pequenos incidentes com o Olympic foram responsáveis pelo atraso da construção do Titanic, pois algumas peças do Titanic foram utilizadas para reparar danos no Olympic.
Fim de carreira: a bordo do RMS TITANIC

O experiente capitão Smith foi nomeado novamente para comandar o maior transatlântico da época: O RMS Titanic. Algumas fontes diziam que, Smith decidiu se aposentar após completar a viagem inaugural do Titanic, um artigo na manhã de Halifax Chronicle em 9 de abril de 1912, afirmava que Smith permaneceria no comando do Titanic até que a empresa (White Star) aposentasse o grande vapor.
10 de abril de 1912. Dia da grande viagem. Smith toma um táxi, vestindo um casaco longo e chapéu para ir até as docas de Southampton. Após sua partida ao meio dia, a grande quantidade de água deslocada causou um imprevisto: uma aproximação exagerada com o SS New York. Por sorte, os funcionários da White Star conseguiram evitar a colisão.
Smith morreu no Titanic e seu corpo nunca foi encontrado. Não se sabe como o Capitão morreu. Fontes afirmam que Smith entrou na ponte alguns minutos antes da quebra.
Uma estátua em sua homenagem foi construída em Beacon Park, Lichfield, na Inglaterra.
